Meet Fernanda Solis
Before starting my journey with Surface Pattern Design, I was working as a psychologist and in human resources within a fashion company. Even though I enjoyed aspects of those roles, deep down I always felt drawn to illustration, creativity, and beautifully designed products. I decided to take the Immersion Course because I’ve always loved products with illustrations and patterns. When I discovered that people could actually make a living creating them, I knew I had to pursue it. It was everything I hoped for and so much more.
Before joining, my biggest hesitation was the price. It was a big investment for me at the time, and I worried whether it would really be worth it. But now I can confidently say it’s worth every single cent.
After taking Immersion, I feel more confident, creative, and aligned with who I want to be as an artist. I started growing my art business, and I was brave enough to create a physical journal for pregnant women using my own pattern. Now, women use it every day (something that still feels surreal). I’m continuing to grow and learn, and I’m working on expanding my business by selling my designs online and building my portfolio so that next year I can pitch to companies and (hopefully!) license my designs.
The best part of the Immersion Course was the creativity. The course gives you the tools, but it doesn’t impose a specific style. You are encouraged to create from your own imagination, personality, and artistic voice.
One skill I truly cherish from being an Immersion student is building an effective workflow. Bonnie explains the process of creating patterns so clearly and intentionally that nothing feels overwhelming. You learn to create patterns in a way that allows you to revisit, refine, and expand them over time.
Since completing the Immersion Course, I’ve created a physical product and many digital ones. I opened an Instagram account for my art, and I’m no longer afraid to show my work to the world!
